Yet another winter tornado outbreak hit the southeast today. The storms here became severe as the sun went down. This storm was actually quite confusing. On radar, it looked like a weak thunderstorm. As it approached, there was little or no lightning, no wind, and light rain. News channels, though, were reporting house fires due to lightning and wind damage where the storm had already hit. The news and my observations seemed to disagree, but the NWS had issued a Tornado Warning, so there must have been rotation in the storm. As the storm passed over, we got a brief burst of heavy rain before it was over. As it turned out, a weak (F1) tornado actually did touch down just west of downtown (the same area that was hit on May 5, 1999). We made a quick view of the area the next morning. There was obviously some damage, but much had already been cleared.
